Legendary Actor Passes Away
Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, the Japanese-American actor best known for playing the villain Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat, has died at age 75. He passed on Thursday in Santa Barbara, California, from complications of a stroke, surrounded by his family.
Iconic Roles in Film and TV
Tagawa appeared in over 150 projects across film, television, and video games. He debuted in Big Trouble in Little China (1986) and gained international attention in The Last Emperor (1987), which won nine Academy Awards.
He became a fan favorite as Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat (1995) and its sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997), later reprising the role in the web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy (2013) and the video game Mortal Kombat 11 (2019).
Other notable work includes Licence to Kill (1989), Rising Sun (1993), Pearl Harbor (2001), Planet of the Apes (2001), Memoirs of a Geisha (2005), and 47 Ronin (2013). On TV, he starred as Trade Minister Nobusuke Tagomi in The Man in the High Castle (2015–2018) and appeared in Lost in Space (2018–2021).
Martial Arts Mastery
Born in Tokyo, Tagawa moved to the U.S. as a child and trained in traditional Japanese karate at USC. He later studied in Japan and developed his own martial arts system, Chun-Shin, which he taught worldwide.

Tagawa lived on Kauai, Hawaii, with his wife Sally. They had three children—Calen, Brynne, and Cana—and two grandchildren, River and Thea.
