Call of Duty Vince Zampella crash

LOS ANGELES — Vince Zampella, a pioneering video game developer whose work shaped some of the industry’s most successful franchises, died Sunday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash on Angeles Crest Highway in Southern California. He was 55.

A passenger traveling with Zampella also died, according to the California Highway Patrol. Authorities have not released the passenger’s identity.

Crash Occurred on Mountain Highway

The crash happened at approximately 12:45 p.m. on Angeles Crest Highway in the San Gabriel Mountains, north of Los Angeles.

CHP officials said a southbound Ferrari exited a tunnel on the winding two-lane road and veered off the roadway. The vehicle struck a concrete barrier and caught fire moments later.

Zampella, who was driving, became trapped inside the vehicle and died at the scene. First responders transported the passenger to a hospital, where the individual later died.

Investigators have not determined what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway. The crash remains under investigation.

Ferrari Involved in Single-Vehicle Collision

A witness provided video footage of the crash to authorities. The footage shows a red Ferrari 296 GTS striking the barrier shortly after exiting the tunnel.

The Ferrari 296 GTS is a high-performance hybrid sports car capable of more than 800 horsepower. Authorities have not said whether speed, road conditions, or mechanical issues contributed to the crash.

Leader Behind Major Gaming Franchises

Zampella served as head of Respawn Entertainment, a studio he co-founded in 2010. Electronic Arts acquired Respawn in 2017.

The studio developed several major titles, including Titanfall, Titanfall 2, Apex Legends, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

Before launching Respawn, Zampella led Infinity Ward as CEO. He co-created the Call of Duty franchise in 2003 alongside Jason West and Grant Collier. The series later became one of the most profitable franchises in entertainment history.

Zampella also oversaw development teams connected to EA’s Battlefield franchise at the company’s Playa Vista studio.

Industry Reaction and Legacy

Electronic Arts confirmed Zampella’s death Monday and praised his influence on the industry.

“Vince’s impact on the world of video games was profound and far-reaching,” EA said in a statement. “His work helped shape modern interactive entertainment and inspired millions of players and developers around the world.”

Industry colleagues described Zampella as a creative leader who focused on player experience and emotional storytelling. Critics credited him with redefining first-person shooters and large-scale multiplayer games.

Zampella’s death marks the loss of one of the most influential figures in modern video game development. His work continues to shape how games are designed and experienced worldwide.
