McCarthy Cleared for Action
The Minnesota Vikings will get starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy back this Sunday against the Washington Commanders. McCarthy, who missed Week 13 due to a concussion, was a full participant in Wednesday’s practice and has officially cleared protocol.
Head coach Kevin O’Connell confirmed, “He’s symptom-free and ready to play.”
Struggles Without the Starter
Rookie Max Brosmer started against the Seattle Seahawks, but the Vikings’ offense struggled mightily, turning the ball over five times—including four interceptions—in a 26-0 shutout loss.
Minnesota is 4-8 and at the bottom of the NFC North. The team ranks 28th in total offense and 25th in scoring this season, highlighting the need for McCarthy’s return.
McCarthy’s Season So Far
McCarthy, a 2024 first-round pick, has faced a rocky rookie season. In six starts, he’s completed 54.1% of passes for 154.8 yards per game, throwing six touchdowns against 10 interceptions.
With five games left, the Vikings will use these matchups to evaluate whether McCarthy can lead the offense moving forward. If progress isn’t shown, Minnesota may consider quarterback changes in the offseason, a year after letting Sam Darnold leave in free agency.
Backup Situation
Undrafted rookie Max Brosmer struggled in his first NFL start. He completed 19 of 30 passes for 126 yards, with four interceptions and no touchdowns. Backup Carson Wentz is out for the season with a shoulder injury, making McCarthy’s return critical for stability.
Looking Ahead
McCarthy’s return gives the Vikings a chance to stop their losing streak and rebuild confidence in the final stretch of the season. Fans will be watching closely to see if he can bring life back to a struggling offense.
