WASHINGTON, D.C. — Former President Donald Trump has declared plans to evict homeless people from the nation’s capital and imprison criminals, sparking debate amid data showing crime in Washington, D.C., is actually declining.
Homeless Must Move Out “IMMEDIATELY,” Trump Says
On Sunday, Trump posted on his Truth Social platform, “The Homeless have to move out, IMMEDIATELY. We will give you places to stay, but FAR from the Capital. The Criminals, you don’t have to move out. We’re going to put you in jail where you belong.”

According to the Washington Police Department, violent crime has dropped by 26% in the first seven months of 2025 compared to last year, while overall crime is down 7%. Mayor Muriel Bowser emphasized the city is at a 30-year low for violent crime and denied any current crime surge.
Legal Authority for Evictions Unclear
Trump did not specify the legal basis for evicting homeless people, noting federal jurisdiction in D.C. covers only federal lands and buildings. Washington’s locally elected government controls most city affairs, with Congressional oversight. Any federal takeover would require new legislation.

Homelessness in Washington
The Community Partnership reports roughly 3,782 homeless individuals in Washington on any given night, most in shelters or transitional housing. About 800 remain unsheltered on the streets.
