MIAMI — A passenger got injured Thursday when an acrylic glass panel shattered on a waterslide aboard Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas. This ship is currently the world’s largest cruise ship.
Incident Details
The accident happened on one of six waterslides in the Category 6 waterpark, located on decks 16 and 17. Bystanders recorded dramatic video showing a large hole in the slide as water poured out. Passengers screamed, urging staff to stop the slide immediately.
Royal Caribbean confirmed that medical staff treated the guest after the panel broke off during the ride. Fortunately, the passenger is in stable condition.
About the Ship
Icon of the Seas started its maiden voyage in January 2024. The ship can carry almost 10,000 passengers at full capacity. The Category 6 waterpark is the largest waterpark at sea, featuring six slides.
Investigation and Cruise Status
Royal Caribbean has closed the waterslide for the rest of the sailing. They have launched an investigation into the incident. The cruise ship is expected to return to Miami on August 9.
