HOLLYWOOD — Todd Haynes’ long-delayed gay romance feature De Noche is returning, and Pedro Pascal is in talks to join the cast. The production, which shut down about a year ago, plans to start filming in Guadalajara, Mexico, in early 2026. Filming schedules are being carefully arranged around Pascal’s busy calendar.
Background: Phoenix Exit and Project Pause
The project faced a major setback when Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix left in 2024 after reportedly missing two weeks on set. Christine Vachon, producer at Killer Films, called the shutdown a “tragedy” but did not provide further details.
Killer Films, known for producing LGBTQ-centered stories, originally had Phoenix attached. He helped bring the project to the company, but his departure left the film on pause.
New Leads: Pascal and Ramirez
Pedro Pascal is expected to join Danny Ramirez, who was already attached. The story, set in the 1930s, follows two men in love who leave Los Angeles for Mexico.
On September 4, Ramirez shared a selfie with Pascal, fueling excitement among fans. Meanwhile, Killer Films, led by Vachon and Pamela Koffler, will produce the feature. The studio recently worked with Pascal on A24’s romantic comedy Materialists, which grossed $85M worldwide.
Outlook for ‘De Noche’
With production set to begin in early 2026, fans of Haynes and LGBTQ cinema are optimistic. They hope De Noche will finally reach the screen after being stalled for so long.
