DUBLIN — Former UFC champion Conor McGregor has officially launched his campaign for Ireland’s presidency ahead of the October 24, 2025, election. In a video filmed outside government buildings in Dublin, McGregor criticized the current administration for failing to address homelessness, mass migration, and public safety.
He pledged to veto legislation without public approval and promised to prioritize Irish sovereignty, presenting a populist platform that has drawn both strong support in polls and skepticism over his polarizing profile.
Endorsements and Support
McGregor’s bid has received backing from tech entrepreneur Elon Musk and has gained traction online. However, questions remain over his ability to secure the necessary nominations from members of the Oireachtas or local councils to officially appear on the ballot.
Campaign Push for Nominations
On September 4, McGregor urged supporters on social media to contact local county councillors and request nominations on his behalf. Under Irish election law, a candidate must be at least 35 years old and nominated by at least 20 Oireachtas members or four local authorities to qualify for the presidential ballot.
“Our councillors are the backbone of our communities,” McGregor wrote. “They work harder and deliver more for the people than those in the Oireachtas, who continue to fail this country time and again. If you are a councillor who feels your voice is ignored, your hands tied, and your community overlooked, then I ask you to stand with me. Nominate me, and I will give you the platform and power to be truly heard.”
McGregor’s Background and Challenges
McGregor first announced his presidential intentions in March 2025, shortly after visiting the White House with U.S. President Donald Trump on St. Patrick’s Day. In his September 4 video, he described himself as “a master of martial arts, a solution-driven man.”
Despite his popularity, McGregor’s candidacy is considered a longshot due to his lack of party affiliation and a controversial history involving sexual assault allegations and violent incidents outside the UFC octagon.
The election is scheduled for October 24, with McGregor needing to secure the required nominations by September 24 to officially appear on the ballot.
