What happened?
A growing measles outbreak in South Carolina has forced 153 unvaccinated students into quarantine for at least three weeks. Health officials confirmed that students from Fairforest Elementary and Global Academy of South Carolina in Spartanburg County were exposed to the virus.
The outbreak has now reached 11 confirmed cases statewide, including a new infection in a Greenville County child. Officials say all cases so far involve unvaccinated individuals with no prior immunity.
Active community transmission
State epidemiologist Dr. Linda Bell warned that measles is now spreading silently in the Upstate region. “This new case shows that there is active, unrecognized community transmission,” she said during a Thursday briefing.
Unvaccinated students exposed to the virus must stay home for 21 days — the maximum incubation period — while being monitored for symptoms such as fever, rash, or red eyes. The South Carolina Department of Public Health said these measures aim to stop further spread in schools and neighborhoods.
Impact on schools and families
The quarantine means three weeks of remote learning for many families. Dr. Kurt Ellenberger, a pediatrician at Beaufort Memorial Hospital, said he has never seen a measles case in his 30-year career. “People don’t realize how dangerous measles was before vaccines. Even a brief exposure can infect up to 90% of unvaccinated people,” he explained.
He added that there is no specific antiviral treatment. “The care is supportive,” Ellenberger said, emphasizing that prevention through vaccination remains essential.
National context
The CDC has reported 1,563 measles cases across the United States this year — the highest in decades. Most patients are between 5 and 19 years old, with three recorded deaths. Georgia has also confirmed 10 cases as of October 8.
Vaccination rates and warnings
Health officials note that Spartanburg County’s MMR vaccination rate stands at 90%, below the 95% threshold needed to prevent outbreaks. Bell urged families to check their vaccination status and protect vulnerable children who cannot receive the vaccine.
