Police in Leland, Mississippi, are investigating a deadly shooting that left four people dead and at least 12 injured during a high school homecoming celebration on Friday night.
What happened
According to CBS News, the shooting took place along a main street as crowds gathered for Leland High School’s homecoming weekend. The area was busier than usual due to the school’s football game against Charleston High School.
Officials confirmed that four of the injured were in critical condition and were airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center for emergency treatment.
Investigation underway
Leland Mayor John Lee told reporters the shooting occurred around midnight. No suspects have been arrested so far. State Senator Derrick T. Simmons said about 20 people were shot during the incident. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) is now assisting local police.
Suspect information
Authorities in Jasper County are also searching for 18-year-old Tylar Jarod Goodloe, who is wanted for questioning in a separate shooting that occurred at Heidelberg High School the same night. Police have asked anyone with information to contact Chief Cornell White or the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office.
Mississippi and gun violence
Mississippi has faced a rise in gun violence in recent years. In May, two brothers opened fire at the Fayette Day Festival, killing one and injuring eight. Another homecoming shooting in 2024 left three people dead and several injured.
Gun laws in Mississippi remain some of the most relaxed in the U.S., allowing residents to carry weapons without a permit or background check.
