PONCHATOULA, La. — A 17-year-old pregnant teenager has died following a road rage shooting in Tangipahoa Parish, authorities confirmed Tuesday.
The Incident
On Sunday, August 24, around 9 a.m., Katelynn Strate, in her third trimester, was a passenger in a Ford Expedition traveling through Ponchatoula when the vehicle was involved in a confrontation with a silver Dodge truck.
Authorities say the truck’s driver, 54-year-old Barry West, engaged in tailgating and brake-checking before firing a single shot into the Expedition. The bullet struck Strate in the head while she sat in the front passenger seat.
Strate was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors performed an emergency C-section to deliver her 27-week-old baby. The infant remains in the neonatal intensive care unit in stable condition.
Strate’s Death and Charges
Strate was declared brain-dead and removed from life support on August 25. Her family confirmed she became an organ donor.
Following her death, West’s charges were upgraded to include second-degree murder. He was initially charged with four counts of attempted second-degree murder, illegal use of a weapon, and obstruction of justice. West remains in custody at Tangipahoa Parish Jail.
Conflicting Claims
West told investigators he believed the Expedition’s occupants had fired at him first. Detectives determined no other shots were fired and no weapon was found in the Expedition.
Sheriff Gerald Sticker called the incident a “senseless tragedy.” Social media claims that West was a former deputy with the sheriff’s office were denied; records show he has not been employed by the agency since 2007.
Community Response
