Sony has announced a PlayStation 5 price increase of $50 across all models in the United States, effective August 21. The standard PS5 will now retail for $549.99, the digital edition for $499.99, and the high-end PS5 Pro for $749.99. Accessories and other regions remain unaffected.
Tariffs Drive Gaming Price Hikes
Sony cited the ongoing economic challenges and rising tariffs as the main reasons for the price change. U.S. tariffs on consoles range from 15% on products from Japan to up to 30% on those from China. Isabelle Tomatis, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s vice president of global marketing, said, “We continue to navigate a challenging economic environment, and stockpiles are running low, leading to this necessary adjustment.”
Industry analysts note that this move mirrors similar decisions by Microsoft and Nintendo, which have raised console and accessory prices this year. Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners explained that despite Sony’s efforts to diversify manufacturing and stockpile units, the company faces unavoidable cost pressures in the U.S. market.
Consumer and Market Impact
The price increase comes as the gaming market slows in the U.S., with consumers spending more on essentials and less on discretionary items like consoles. Microsoft raised Xbox prices earlier this year, while Nintendo increased Switch accessory costs. Analysts warn that tariffs could lead to further increases if negotiations between the U.S. and trading partners do not produce a deal.
For now, Sony will maintain current prices for PlayStation 5 accessories and products sold outside the U.S., following similar adjustments made earlier this year in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.
