YORK COUNTY, Pennsylvania — A rural Pennsylvania community is reeling after three police officers were killed and two others critically injured in a violent shooting tied to a domestic-related investigation on Wednesday afternoon.
What happened?
The incident unfolded just after 2 p.m. local time in North Codorus Township, a rural part of York County about 100 miles east of Philadelphia. Officers were following up on a domestic investigation that had begun the day before when gunfire erupted.
According to Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Colonel Christopher L. Paris, the shooter ambushed law enforcement officers as they arrived on Haar Road. “This was a devastating attack on those who serve,” Paris said.
The gunman, who has not yet been publicly identified, was shot and killed by police during the confrontation.
Casualties and response
Three officers died at the scene, while two others were airlifted to a nearby hospital in critical but stable condition. Images from the scene showed a police officer being evacuated by medical helicopter as emergency vehicles lined the rural road.
Authorities confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Community impact
The shooting prompted a brief shelter-in-place order for schools in the Spring Grove district, though officials later confirmed no students were harmed.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro traveled to York County to meet with grieving families and vowed state support. “We grieve for the loss of life of three precious souls who served this county, served this commonwealth, served this country,” Shapiro said. “This kind of violence is not OK. We need to do better as a society.”
Shapiro ordered all Pennsylvania state flags lowered to half-staff in honor of the fallen officers.
Federal involvement
Federal agencies including the FBI and ATF are assisting with the investigation. FBI Director Kash Patel said agents were on the ground supporting state and local partners. “Our prayers are with the officers, their families, and the entire York County community,” Patel said.
Attorney General Pam Bondi also condemned the violence, calling attacks on law enforcement “a scourge on our society and never acceptable.”
Ongoing investigation
Authorities said charges for stalking and criminal trespass had been filed against the shooter earlier that day. Investigators believe the gunman may have been waiting for officers when they arrived.
Officials have not released the suspect’s name or the motive for the attack.
