MANHATTAN, N.Y. — The family of 17-year-old Shalon McFarlane is mourning his tragic death after he was fatally stabbed inside a Manhattan subway station on Saturday, July 20. The Bronx teen was involved in a violent altercation on the platform of the West 14th Street and 7th Avenue station shortly after 7 p.m.
What happened on the subway platform?
According to the NYPD, officers responded to a report of a stabbing around 7:04 p.m. and discovered McFarlane with a stab wound to the chest. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died.
A second man, 24-year-old Brandon Gonzales, was also found with a stab wound to his torso and was taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition. A third person, a 20-year-old man, was present but not injured.
Who was charged — and why?
On Sunday, police arrested Brandon Gonzales, also of The Bronx, and charged him with manslaughter. The NYPD says the stabbing occurred during a fight between three individuals that escalated quickly. Gonzales was arraigned on Monday and released on $20,000 bond with electronic monitoring.
The NYPD has not released footage or further details about the moments leading up to the stabbing, but the case is still under investigation.
What is Gonzales saying?
Gonzales’ defense attorney, Geoffrey Stewart, claims his client was acting in self-defense — specifically to protect his brother, who he says was stabbed first during the brawl.
“It’s really a textbook case of him defending himself,” Stewart told reporters. He said the altercation started over a minor confrontation — allegedly a glance — and escalated when McFarlane pulled out a knife.
Stewart also disputed reports that Gonzales and his brother pursued McFarlane, insisting they did not initiate the fight. “Shalon seemed to be looking for a confrontation and it ended up in tragic circumstances,” Stewart said.
Who was Shalon McFarlane?
McFarlane was described by his loved ones as “a bright light” full of promise and love. On social media, friends affectionately referred to him as “Timar” & “Timo”, flooding comment sections with tearful tributes. The teen, who lived in Fordham North, is remembered by family and friends as a kind-hearted soul.
A GoFundMe campaign launched by McFarlane’s family is now seeking donations to help cover funeral expenses. His mother wrote:
“This devastating loss has left our family shattered and unprepared for the unexpected financial burden… Any donation, no matter how small, will go directly toward giving Shalon the dignified farewell he deserves.”

Subway violence: A growing concern?
McFarlane is the third person killed in New York City’s subway system this year, according to NYPD and MTA data. While 2024 subway homicides are tracking lower than the 10 recorded in 2023, public concern about transit safety remains high.
Both McFarlane and Gonzales are from the Bronx — McFarlane from Fordham North, and Gonzales from Wakefield. The NYPD continues to investigate the deadly confrontation.
