DOJO WORLD — Beloved actor and musician Malcolm-Jamal Warner, best known for his iconic role as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, has died at the age of 54 after drowning while swimming on vacation in Costa Rica.
What happened?
Warner was swimming at Playa Cocles in the Caribbean province of Limón on Sunday, July 20, when a strong current pulled him out to sea around 2:10 p.m. local time. Bystanders pulled him to shore, and CPR was administered by Costa Rica’s Red Cross, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Another man who was swimming with him remains in critical condition.
Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Police confirmed the cause of death as asphyxia by submersion — accidental drowning.
Life and legacy of Theo Huxtable
Warner rose to fame in 1984 as the lovable Theo Huxtable, the only son in the fictional Huxtable family on NBC’s The Cosby Show. Cast at just 13 years old, he starred in all 197 episodes of the show, earning a Primetime Emmy nomination in 1986. The show broke ground for Black representation on television, with Warner’s portrayal of Theo helping to redefine Black boyhood for millions of viewers.
Despite later controversy surrounding Bill Cosby, Warner often expressed pride in the show’s cultural impact. “The Cosby Show legitimized the Black middle class,” he once said. “The Huxtables were aspirational but real.”

Warner was not just an actor. He was a Grammy-winning musician, poet, and social advocate. In 2015, he won a Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance for a collaboration on Stevie Wonder’s “Jesus Children of America.” His spoken word album Hiding in Plain View earned another Grammy nomination in 2023.
In recent years, Warner starred on The Resident as Dr. AJ “The Raptor” Austin and had recurring roles on 9-1-1 and Alert: Missing Persons Unit. He also launched a podcast in 2024, Not All Hood, which explored mental health in the Black community.

Tributes from across Hollywood and beyond have flooded social media. Actor Viola Davis wrote: “Theo was OUR son, OUR brother, OUR friend. We rejoiced in your life and are gutted by this loss.”
Tracee Ellis Ross, Warner’s co-star on Reed Between the Lines, said: “My heart is so so sad. What an actor and friend you were: warm, gentle, present, kind, thoughtful, deep, funny, elegant.”
Magic Johnson, who collaborated with Warner on an AIDS awareness campaign, called him “a friend who will truly be missed.”
Fellow actors including Jamie Foxx, Taraji P. Henson, Kevin Hart, and Jennifer Love Hewitt also shared heartfelt tributes, with many highlighting Warner’s authenticity, grace, and enduring impact.
Personal life
Warner was married and had a young daughter, though he kept their identities private. His mother, Pamela Warner, was instrumental in guiding his early career and served as his manager. He was previously in relationships with actresses Michelle Thomas, Karen Malina White, and Regina King.
