GRAND BLANC, Michigan — At least four people were killed and eight others wounded Sunday when a gunman rammed a vehicle into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, opened fire with an assault rifle, and set a fire that engulfed the building, authorities said.
What happened?
Police say the attack began around 10:25 a.m. during a large Sunday service attended by hundreds. The suspect, identified as Thomas Jacob Sanford, 40, of Burton, drove into the church, opened fire on worshippers, and deliberately started a fire inside.
Officers responded within minutes, exchanging gunfire with the attacker and killing him at 10:33 a.m.
Casualties and Injuries
Police confirmed four fatalities, including two victims found later in the burned remains of the church. Eight others sustained gunshot wounds; seven are in stable condition, while one remains in critical care. Officials warned that more victims may be discovered as investigators search the site.
Community and Law Enforcement Response
Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye said the suspect’s motive remains unclear, but investigators are reviewing his property and phone records. The FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are assisting.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer called the attack “unacceptable violence in a place of worship,” while U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi described it as “heartbreaking and chilling.”
President Donald Trump condemned the attack on Truth Social, calling it “yet another targeted attack on Christians in the United States of America” and urged the nation to “PRAY for the victims, and their families.”
Fire Contained, Investigation Ongoing
The blaze that tore through the church was contained by firefighters after evacuations, though the building sustained heavy damage. More than 100 FBI agents are now working with local authorities on the case.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints confirmed the tragedy in a statement: “We pray for peace and healing for all involved.”
