PINSON, Alabama (DOJO) — A tight-knit Alabama community is grieving the loss of 18-year-old Kimber Mills, a senior cheerleader at Cleveland High School, who died after being shot during a weekend bonfire party in Pinson.
What Happened
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called just before 12:30 a.m. on October 19 to a wooded area known locally as “The Pit.” Officers found Mills, an 18-year-old man, and a 21-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds. A fourth victim, a 20-year-old woman, was later taken to hospital by private vehicle.
Investigators believe a fight broke out before the gunfire. Mills, who was struck in the leg and head, was airlifted to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, where doctors later declared her brain-dead.
Final Goodbye
On October 22, hundreds of classmates, friends, and teachers lined the hospital hallways for an honor walk as Kimber was wheeled to surgery for organ donation. Her family said the moment was both heartbreaking and inspiring.
“Our sweet baby sister went to be with the Lord at 7:08 last night,” her sister wrote. “She had the biggest gathering for Honor Walk the doctor has ever seen. She was and is so loved by so many.”
According to WVTM 13, Kimber’s heart was donated to a seven-year-old girl, while other organs have already saved additional lives.
The Suspect
Authorities arrested 27-year-old Steven Tyler Whitehead, who now faces one count of capital murder and three counts of attempted murder. Whitehead, a former specialist with the 168th Engineer Company of the Alabama National Guard, was discharged earlier this month for unrelated reasons.
A longtime friend told local media that Whitehead was a “good person” who may have been struggling with mental-health issues. He remains in custody without bond and is expected to appear before Judge Kandice Pickett later this week.
Community Support
The small town of Cleveland has rallied around the Mills family, holding vigils and fundraisers to help with funeral and medical expenses. A GoFundMe campaign titled “Support Kimber Mills and Her Family” has already drawn thousands of donations.
