CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Prosecutors say Decarlos Brown Jr., 34, could face the death penalty after he stabbed and killed Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska on a North Carolina train.
What Happened
Investigators say Brown carried out the knife attack last month on the 23-year-old refugee. Zarutska had fled Ukraine with her family in 2022. Witnesses reported that Brown shouted, “I got a white girl, I got a white girl”, during the attack.
The Justice Department charged him with first-degree murder and a federal count of causing death on a mass transportation system. Attorney General Pamela Bondi vowed to seek the harshest punishment.
“He will never again see the light of day as a free man,” Bondi said.
