BLACK ROCK CITY, Nev. — Burning Man organizers temporarily closed the festival gates Sunday evening after severe dust storms and high winds swept across the Black Rock Desert, toppling tents and damaging camps.
Gates Closed, Travel Delayed
At around 6 p.m. Sunday, Burning Man announced that all gates were shut to incoming and outgoing traffic, advising participants still in Reno to delay travel to the playa. Cars already waiting on Gate Road faced an estimated seven- to eight-hour delay before entry.
The National Weather Service issued both wind and flood advisories, forecasting gusts up to 50 mph through Sunday night. Organizers said gates would remain closed until conditions improved, with no clear estimate for reopening.
Dust Storms Hit Black Rock City
The weekend brought violent conditions to the playa. On Saturday, sustained gusts over 45 mph ripped through Black Rock City, flattening camps and destroying at least one large art piece.
Four minor injuries were reported, and participants were urged to secure campsites and avoid driving in whiteout conditions. The gate was briefly closed Saturday as well, but operations resumed within two hours.
Community Resilience on Display
Despite the chaos, Burning Man emphasized that the spirit of communal effort remains strong. Campers worked together to repair damaged structures and support neighbors.
By Sunday afternoon, livestreams from the playa showed calmer conditions, with participants riding bikes and art cars gathering near the Man effigy. The festival continues, though organizers warned of potential wind and rain through Tuesday.
Tech Keeps Playa Connected
Longtime attendee and musician Johnny Diggz credited Starlink internet service with helping participants stay informed during the storm. “Without Starlink, communication and updates would have been far worse,” he noted, highlighting how tech has quietly become a lifeline for festivalgoers.
