CHICAGO, USA — President Donald Trump is facing sharp criticism from Democrats after posting a meme that appeared to threaten Chicago with deportations and military force. The post, shared on Truth Social, styled Trump as Robert Duvall’s character from the 1979 Vietnam War film Apocalypse Now. The image read “Chipocalypse Now” with Trump adding: “I love the smell of deportations in the morning.”
A Post That Sparked Outrage
Trump went further, writing: “Chicago about to find out why it’s called the Department of WAR.” The remark referenced his recent executive order renaming the Department of Defense to the Department of War. Critics say the language crossed a dangerous line, suggesting military action against a U.S. city.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom blasted the post. “The President of the United States is deploying the military onto U.S. streets and using our troops like political pawns. DO NOT ALLOW YOURSELF TO BECOME NUMB TO THIS,” he wrote on X.
Pushback From Illinois Leaders
Illinois Sen. Tammy Duckworth, a combat veteran and retired Army National Guard lieutenant colonel, also condemned Trump. “No Donald, Chicago is not your war zone,” she wrote, calling the meme “stolen valor at its worst.” Duckworth said Trump’s comments insulted both veterans and the people of Chicago.
Both Illinois senators have rejected the idea of federal troops policing the city. They argue the president’s post reflects authoritarian overreach rather than legitimate security policy.
A Growing Pattern
Newsom and Trump have clashed before. Over the summer, Trump deployed National Guard troops and Marines to Los Angeles during anti-ICE protests without state approval. That decision fueled ongoing tensions between the White House and Democratic governors over the limits of federal power.
This latest incident deepens concerns about how the president uses social media to communicate threats, especially when tied to immigration crackdowns. For critics, Trump’s “Chipocalypse Now” post shows a willingness to blur the line between political theater and military force.
