MOUNT VERNON, Virginia — President Donald Trump announced on Saturday (Sept. 20, 2025) that he will award Ben Carson the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. It is the third such award Trump has revealed this month.

Trump made the surprise reveal during an event for the American Cornerstone Institute, founded by Carson.
“Congratulations, Ben. He didn’t know this. I hope he’s happy,” Trump said to applause.
Carson, 74, once ran against Trump in the 2016 Republican primary. Later, he joined Trump’s Cabinet as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. Over time, the two forged a strong alliance. Carson even surfaced as a possible running mate in Trump’s 2024 campaign. Instead, he became Trump’s national faith chairman.
Carson’s influence
Carson remains a central voice in conservative circles. He has long opposed abortion rights and same-sex marriage. At the same time, he has built a career as a bestselling author and speaker. More recently, he has led faith-based and policy programs through his institute.
Medal of Freedom legacy
President John F. Kennedy created the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1963. It recognizes individuals who make major contributions to U.S. security, diplomacy, culture, or public service.
Trump awarded the medal to 24 recipients in his first term. Since returning to office, he has already named several honorees. Earlier this month, Trump said he would grant the medal to Rudy Giuliani, the former New York mayor, after Giuliani suffered serious injuries in a car crash. On Sept. 11, Trump also announced a posthumous award for conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot at a Utah university.
The White House has not yet set the date for Carson’s ceremony.
