Global News has confirmed that several Starbucks locations in British Columbia will be closing their doors for good on Sept. 27.
Which B.C. Starbucks Stores Are Closing?
The following stores will serve their final customers this week:
- 176 Brew St., Port Moody
- 10151 Number 3 Rd., Richmond
- Austin Station, 2662 Austin Ave., Coquitlam
- 1208 Tranquille Rd., Kamloops
- 3094 Skaha Lake Rd., Penticton
- 2840 Bentall St., Vancouver
- 801 Fort St., Victoria
- 1872 Trans-Canada Hwy., Revelstoke
- Alder Crossing, 3278 King George Blvd., Surrey
- 2035 Yukon St., Vancouver
Starbucks did not provide a full list but said closures followed a review of operations. Global News independently confirmed the B.C. locations shutting down.
Why Are Starbucks Stores Closing?
In a statement, Starbucks Canada said the decision was based on either financial underperformance or inability to create the physical environment customers expect.
“Each year, we open and close coffeehouses for a variety of reasons, from financial performance to lease expirations,” Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol wrote in a letter to staff. “This is a more significant action that we understand will impact partners and customers. Our coffeehouses are centres of the community and closing any location is difficult.”
Wider Layoffs and North American Impact
The closures are part of a broader restructuring that will also see Starbucks lay off around 900 non-retail employees in the U.S. and Canada. Employees impacted by layoffs will be notified and offered severance and support packages.
Starbucks expects to finish its fiscal year with 18,300 stores across North America — down 124 from last year, marking a rare contraction for the global coffee chain.
Despite the downsizing, the company says it plans to remodel and “uplift” more than 1,000 locations over the next year, aiming for “greater texture, warmth, and layered design.” Starbucks also maintains that overall store growth will continue in the years ahead.
What It Means for Customers
While some stores are closing, Starbucks said Canadians can still expect new openings and upgraded café designs across the country in the next 12 months. Government social benefits cheques and prepaid cards distributed through Canada Post partner counters in select Starbucks locations will not be impacted.
