TEXAS, USA — After three consecutive failures earlier this year, SpaceX achieved a major milestone on Tuesday, August 26, as its massive Super Heavy-Starship rocket completed a largely successful tenth test flight.

Successful Liftoff and Flight

The 403-foot-tall Starship lifted off from SpaceX’s Starbase facility on the Texas Gulf Coast at 6:30 p.m. local time, powered by 33 methane-fueled Raptor engines. The Super Heavy booster propelled the Starship upper stage into a suborbital trajectory, successfully separating and demonstrating a powered splashdown in the Indian Ocean.

Despite intense reentry heating damaging the protective “skirt” around the Starship’s engines and partially melting a control flap, the vehicle remained stable throughout the flight. The booster, meanwhile, performed a simulated engine failure during descent and splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico as planned, allowing engineers to collect critical performance data.

Key Milestones

The upper stage successfully deployed mock Starlink satellites using its “Pez”-like system, a first for Starship test flights. This achievement follows a series of explosive failures that raised questions about the vehicle’s reliability and readiness for crewed missions to the Moon and Mars.

Elon Musk and SpaceX engineers celebrated throughout the one-hour, six-minute flight, marking a morale boost after several high-profile setbacks. “Splashdown confirmed! Congratulations to the entire SpaceX team on an exciting tenth flight test of Starship!” SpaceX said in a post on X.

Challenges Ahead


Despite Tuesday’s success, numerous technical hurdles remain. SpaceX still needs to perfect orbital refueling, a fully reusable heat shield, and a consistent landing method for the Super Heavy booster. These capabilities are essential for Musk’s long-term vision of lunar missions in 2027 and eventual Mars colonization.

Analysts caution that while the flight was encouraging, Starship’s track record remains uneven. “The successes have not exceeded the failures,” noted Dallas Kasaboski, a space analyst for Analysys Mason.

Looking Forward


The Starship program continues under SpaceX’s “fail fast, learn fast” philosophy, which prioritizes rapid iteration to achieve reusable, cost-effective rockets. With the tenth flight demonstrating resilience under extreme conditions, the company moves closer to its goal of expanding deep-space missions and increasing Starlink satellite deployment capacity.
