In a recent social media update, Senator Dr. the Hon. Dana Morris Dixon, Minister of Education, Skills, Youth & Information, spotlighted the Learning & Investment for Transformation (LIFT) Programme — a key initiative from the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) designed to help school leavers transition into the workforce.
Though not newly launched, LIFT continues to be a cornerstone in the JLP’s youth empowerment strategy. The program supports high school graduates who’ve earned at least five (5) CSEC subjects but are not yet enrolled in university.
“I don’t think any other government has been able to do the things we have been doing” the Minister emphasized in a video posted to the party’s official Instagram page (@jlpjamaica). Her statement was made while highlighting the continued rollout of the LIFT Programme, which she described as a tangible example of the government’s commitment to youth development and workforce readiness in Jamaica.
What is LIFT?
The LIFT Programme, coordinated through the Ministry of Education and HEART/NSTA Trust, targets students aged 17 and older with the following support:
- Monthly stipend of $85,000 JMD
- Job placement and professionalism training
- Assistance with critical life documents:
- Driver’s Licence
- Passport
- Bank Account
- TRN (Tax Registration Number)
- NIS (National Insurance Scheme) Card
Each year, 500 students benefit from the program, which is scheduled to run over five (5) years.
A Step Toward Economic Mobility
By easing the transition between secondary education and employment, the JLP is positioning LIFT as a key solution to youth unemployment and underemployment. It’s one of several government-led programs aimed at closing social and economic gaps.

Though it may not have made headlines recently, LIFT reflects the government’s effort to move beyond rhetoric. By investing directly in the capabilities and independence of young Jamaicans, the JLP is banking on tangible impact — the kind that voters remember.
