Gunman storms NFL and Blackstone headquarters, opens fire before dying by suicide on 33rd floor
NEW YORK, USA — A terrifying shooting unfolded in the heart of Midtown Manhattan on Monday evening as a gunman opened fire inside a corporate skyscraper, killing four people — including a married NYPD officer — before turning the rifle on himself during a deadly rampage that gripped the city at rush hour.
Who was the shooter?
The NYPD identified the gunman as Shane Devon Tamura, 27, of Las Vegas, Nevada. Wearing body armor and armed with an AR-15-style rifle, Tamura exited a double-parked BMW outside 345 Park Avenue, walked through the building’s front doors at 6:28 p.m., and began shooting without warning.
Authorities say Tamura drove cross-country from Nevada, traveling through Colorado and New Jersey, before arriving in New York on the afternoon of the attack. Law enforcement sources say he had a mental health history and legally owned multiple firearms in Nevada.
His motive remains unknown. However, rumors are swirling online about possible links to the NFL, whose headquarters is inside the tower — the same building Tamura attacked.
What happened inside the skyscraper?
Moments after entering the 44-story building — home to Blackstone, the NFL, and other high-profile tenants — Tamura opened fire in the lobby. He fatally shot NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, 36, who was working an off-duty private security job.
Tamura then shot a second man in the lobby, who survived, before marching toward the elevators and opening fire again. A female bystander was spared, reportedly locking eyes with the killer before he allowed her to pass unharmed.
From there, Tamura took the elevator up to the 33rd floor, home to Rudin Management, where he continued his rampage, fatally shooting at least one more person before turning the weapon on himself.
He was found dead at the scene with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. The incident was declared “contained” by NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, who said there is no ongoing threat.
Who were the victims?
Authorities confirmed the death of Officer Didarul Islam, a Bangladeshi immigrant, father of two, and soon-to-be father of three. Islam had served the NYPD for three and a half years and was assigned to a Bronx precinct.
“This is a devastating loss,” Commissioner Tisch said. “He was a protector even off-duty — a husband, a father, and a hero.”
The identities of the three other people killed have not yet been released as family notifications are still underway. A fifth victim remains in critical condition at a local hospital.
What was found in Tamura’s car?
After the shooting, police secured Tamura’s vehicle, which was registered in his name and left double-parked outside the tower. Inside, they found:
- A rifle case with additional rounds
- A loaded revolver
- Extra magazines
- Medication prescribed to Tamura
There were no explosives discovered, and FBI officials joined the NYPD in processing the scene.
Who was Shane Tamura?
Tamura had once been a standout football player at Golden Valley High School and later Granada Hills Charter in California. Records show he wore jersey #2 and racked up over 600 rushing yards in 2015. He also averaged nearly 30 yards per kickoff return.
Social media sleuths speculated that Tamura had unfulfilled NFL ambitions, possibly fueling a personal vendetta against the league. However, police have not confirmed any connection between the shooter and the NFL or any building tenant.
City on edge after violent Midtown attack
The massacre rattled New York City during one of its busiest hours, with workers fleeing into the streets, others barricading themselves inside offices, and sirens filling the air for blocks.
“We’re shaken,” said a witness from the 31st floor. “It felt like the whole world just stopped.”
The NYPD bomb squad, emergency services, and federal agents all responded. Authorities stressed the incident was isolated and that the lone gunman acted alone.
