Micron Technology is retiring its Crucial brand, bringing nearly three decades of consumer-focused RAM kits and solid-state drives (SSDs) to an end. The move, announced Wednesday, shifts Micron’s focus to supplying memory for AI data centers, a decision that could worsen the global memory shortage and impact PC builders and enthusiasts worldwide.
Crucial’s Legacy Comes to a Close
Since 1996, Crucial has been a go-to brand for PC builders, competing with Samsung, SK Hynix, Corsair, and Seagate. Micron will continue selling Crucial products until February 2026, providing support and honoring warranties for existing customers. After that, the brand will disappear from retailers and online stores.
AI Demand Drives the Change
The retirement comes as AI data centers soak up unprecedented amounts of DRAM and high-bandwidth memory (HBM). “The AI-driven growth in the data center has led to a surge in demand for memory and storage,” said Sumit Sadana, Micron executive vice president. “We made the difficult decision to exit the Crucial consumer business to better support our larger, strategic customers.”
Already, RAM prices have surged due to AI demand, affecting PC builders, smartphone makers, and cloud providers. The end of Crucial products could make consumer memory even scarcer and more expensive.
Support for Consumers and Employees
Micron says it will continue honoring warranties and providing support for Crucial products. Employees affected by the closure will be offered redeployment opportunities within the company.
For PC enthusiasts and DIY builders, the retirement of Crucial is a major blow. It removes a trusted, affordable option for memory and storage just as competition for RAM and SSDs heats up, leaving hobbyists facing higher prices and fewer choices.
