INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana — Former NFL quarterback and current Fox Sports analyst Mark Sanchez was arrested early Saturday after being stabbed during a violent altercation in downtown Indianapolis, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD).
What Happened?
Police said the incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. Saturday near Loughmiller’s Pub & Eatery, located in the busy Wholesale District just steps from the Indiana Statehouse.
According to authorities, Sanchez, 38, allegedly confronted a 69-year-old delivery driver who was unloading food nearby, reportedly telling the man to move his vehicle. The driver told police Sanchez appeared agitated and aggressive, prompting him to use pepper spray in an attempt to defuse the situation.
When that failed, the driver claimed he acted in self-defense, stabbing Sanchez once in the chest.
Injuries and Charges
Both men sustained injuries during the confrontation. Police said one man suffered stab wounds while the other was treated for lacerations.
Sanchez was taken to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery and was listed in stable condition, according to Fox Sports.
The former NFL star faces multiple misdemeanor charges, including:
- Battery with injury
- Unlawful entry of a motor vehicle
- Public intoxication
The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will decide whether formal charges will be filed.
Police and Network Statements
IMPD said detectives have reviewed video footage and witness statements, and believe the altercation was an isolated incident, not a random attack.
Fox Sports issued a statement expressing support for Sanchez, saying:
“We are deeply grateful to the medical team for their exceptional care and support. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mark, and we ask that everyone please respect his and his family’s privacy during this time.”
Who Is Mark Sanchez?
A Long Beach, California native, Sanchez starred at the University of Southern California (USC) before being drafted fifth overall by the New York Jets in the 2009 NFL Draft.
He led the Jets to back-to-back AFC Championship appearances in his first two seasons and finished his 10-year NFL career with 15,357 passing yards, 86 touchdowns, and 89 interceptions.
Since retiring in 2019, Sanchez has worked as a football analyst for Fox Sports, previously spending two years with ABC and ESPN.
