PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Judge Frank Caprio, the warm-hearted jurist whose televised rulings on Caught in Providence made him a national figure, has died at age 88.
His family announced his death on Aug. 20 through his official Facebook page. The post said he “passed away peacefully” after “a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.”
Caprio revealed his diagnosis in 2023 and asked supporters for prayers in a heartfelt Instagram video. Just one day before his passing, he recorded a final message from his hospital bed, thanking the public for their encouragement and asking once again for prayers.
A judge remembered for kindness
“Beloved for his compassion, humility, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people, Judge Caprio touched the lives of millions,” his family wrote. “His warmth, humor, and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew him.”
Friends also described him as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Born in Providence in 1936, Caprio came from an Italian-American family. He attended Suffolk University School of Law at night and later became a municipal judge in 1985.
His courtroom soon became the center of Caught in Providence, a local-access show capturing minor cases. Clips of his compassionate rulings—often involving struggling families or seniors—went viral, turning him into a global symbol of justice with humanity. The show eventually streamed on Prime Video, expanding his reach to millions worldwide.
Caprio’s style stood out. Rather than focus only on punishment, he often considered personal circumstances, proving that justice could remain firm yet merciful.
Tributes from leaders
Governor Dan McKee called Caprio “a Rhode Island treasure” and ordered flags flown at half-staff. “He showed us what justice looks like when tempered with empathy,” McKee said.
Senate leaders praised him as a man who “saw the humanity in everyone” and inspired kindness across the world.
A lasting legacy
Caprio retired in 2023, ending a career defined by compassion. His approach reached far beyond Providence, inspiring millions who believed in a kinder form of justice.
“His legacy lives on in the countless acts of kindness he inspired,” his family said. “In his honor, may we all bring more compassion into the world — just as he did every day.”
