Italy and Spain have announced they are dispatching naval vessels to escort the Global Sumud Flotilla as it sails toward Gaza, marking a dramatic escalation in European involvement. The decision comes after repeated attacks on the flotilla, including a suspected Israeli drone strike earlier this week.
While Spain framed the deployment as a defense of international law and maritime safety, Italy’s motives appear more complex. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni criticized the flotilla as “dangerous and irresponsible,” but Defense Minister Guido Crosetto defended the deployment as “an act of humanity” to protect Italian citizens onboard.
How much danger is the flotilla in?
The flotilla, carrying humanitarian aid, is approaching Gaza waters under growing threats from Israel. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir branded the activists “terrorists,” while Israel’s Foreign Ministry dismissed the voyage as a “jihadist initiative.”
Israel has vowed it will “not allow any vessel to enter the active combat zone” and breach its naval blockade of Gaza. Three previous attempts this year to deliver aid by sea were intercepted, with crews detained or forced to turn back.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, speaking in New York during the UN General Assembly, said:
“The government of Spain demands that international law be complied with and that the right of its citizens to navigate the Mediterranean under safe conditions be respected.”
Spain has committed to sending a warship to ensure the safety of its nationals and uphold maritime rights.

The naval move comes as tensions over Gaza dominate international discussions. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas delivered his General Assembly address via pre-recorded video after he and his delegation were denied visas to enter the United States.
Meanwhile, Gaza itself remains under heavy bombardment. At least 17 people were reported killed Thursday as Israel’s military campaign continued.
