Who was killed?
The deceased has been identified as Dick Uriah Palmer, otherwise called “Children”, a labourer of Cumberland Meadows, Portmore.
What happened?
Police say the incident occurred around 1:00 a.m. on Thursday while Palmer was at a vigil in Caymanas Gardens, Gregory Park. He was reportedly approached by a man with whom he had a brief conversation.
The man then allegedly brandished a firearm and opened fire, hitting Palmer in the upper body. The gunman fled the scene on foot through the community.
Palmer attempted to run to a nearby premises for help and was later rushed to the Spanish Town Hospital, where he died while receiving treatment.
Arrest made
Following an investigation by the Portmore Criminal Investigations Branch, a suspect — a mechanic from Gregory Park, Portmore — was arrested on Thursday in connection with the murder.
The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue.
