A campus built for learning turned into a lockdown zone
DOJO – Final exams were underway when panic ripped through Brown University.
On Saturday afternoon, gunfire erupted inside an engineering and physics building on the Ivy League campus in Providence, Rhode Island. By nightfall, at least two people were dead and eight others critically wounded, according to authorities. The suspected shooter remains at large.
Students expecting quiet exam rooms instead found themselves running for cover.
What happened?
Police say the shooting began around 4:05 p.m. local time inside a building where students were actively sitting final exams. Witnesses reported hearing multiple loud pops before chaos followed.
Authorities described the suspect as a male dressed entirely in black, believed to have fled the scene on foot. Law enforcement searched academic buildings, residential streets, porches, and backyards for hours afterward.
Despite early reports suggesting a suspect had been detained, officials later clarified that no shooter is in custody.
A shelter-in-place order remains in effect.
Students describe fear and confusion
Emma Ferraro, a chemical engineering student, said she was working in the building’s lobby when she heard gunshots coming from the east side.
“At first, I didn’t process it,” she said. “Then I realized what it was and just ran.”
Ferraro escaped to a nearby building and remained there for hours as police secured the area. Similar stories echoed across campus as students barricaded doors, hid in classrooms, or fled into nearby neighborhoods.
The victims and injuries
Eight people suffering gunshot wounds were transported to Rhode Island Hospital.

Authorities warn the number of casualties could still rise.
Shooter still at large
Police believe the suspect used a handgun, according to law enforcement officials familiar with the investigation. No motive has been identified.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said all available resources are being used to locate the shooter and urged residents near campus to stay inside.
“We are doing everything we can,” Smiley said. “This is an active and evolving situation.”
Federal response and national attention
President Donald Trump, the current U.S. president, confirmed he has been briefed on the shooting.
Federal agencies, including the FBI, ATF, and Secret Service, are assisting local law enforcement as the manhunt continues.
Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee called the attack “unthinkable.”
Why this moment hits differently
This shooting occurred in Rhode Island — a state with some of the strictest gun laws in the country. Just last year, lawmakers passed legislation banning the sale and manufacture of certain high-powered firearms.
Yet even in a heavily regulated state, a university became a crime scene during finals week.

What happens next
Brown University has not yet announced how exams will proceed or when the shelter-in-place order will be lifted. Counseling services are expected to be expanded as the campus grapples with trauma.
