The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES — HBO’s hospital drama The Pitt and Apple TV+’s Hollywood satire The Studio took home top honors at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday night. First-time host Nate Bargatze, a low-key stand-up comedian, guided the three-hour ceremony with humor that largely steered clear of politics.
Opening Sketch: ‘SNL’ Stars Join Bargatze
“Saturday Night Live” cast members James Austin Johnson, Mikey Day, and Bowen Yang joined Bargatze for the cold open, poking fun at modern television. Dressed as Philo T. Farnsworth, Bargatze imagined streaming as “a new way for these companies to lose money,” blending historical context with contemporary gags.
Stephen Colbert’s Bittersweet Win
Stephen Colbert addressed CBS’ decision to end The Late Show in 2026 during his hosting duties for the comedy actor category. Hours later, he returned to accept the Emmy for Outstanding Talk Series, delivering a heartfelt message: “Sometimes, you only know how much you love something when you get a sense you might be losing it … stay strong and be brave.”
Historic Moments and Advocacy
Tramell Tillman of Severance became the first Black man to win Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. He dedicated his win to his mother, sharing advice she gave him: “Do the work. Show up. And most importantly, don’t embarrass me in public.”
Meanwhile, Hacks star Hannah Einbinder used her speech to advocate for Palestinian rights, closing with “Free Palestine.” Several other attendees echoed calls for a ceasefire in Gaza.
In Memoriam: Malcolm-Jamal Warner
The ceremony paid tribute to late actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who drowned on July 20. “He remains in our hearts,” said The Cosby Show co-star Phylicia Rashad during the In Memoriam segment.
