Themba Gorimbo has officially announced his retirement from mixed martial arts following his recent UFC loss in Australia.
The Zimbabwean welterweight confirmed the news through an emotional social media statement on Thursday, bringing an end to one of the most inspirational journeys in recent MMA history.
“I dared to be someone and something and failed,” Gorimbo wrote on Instagram.
The 35-year-old retires following a split decision loss to Jonathan Micallef at UFC Fight Night in Perth on May 2, which marked his third consecutive defeat inside the Octagon.

Gorimbo ends his professional MMA career with a 14-7 record and a 4-4 run in the UFC.
After losing his UFC debut to A.J. Fletcher in 2023, Gorimbo rebounded with four consecutive victories over:
- Takashi Sato
- Pete Rodriguez
- Ramiz Brahimaj
- Niko Price
The streak quickly made him one of the UFC welterweight division’s most talked-about underdog stories.
Unfortunately for Gorimbo, momentum shifted after losses to Vicente Luque, Jeremiah Wells, and Jonathan Micallef.
Themba Gorimbo’s Story Reached Beyond MMA
Gorimbo became widely known in combat sports because of his personal journey outside the cage.
Born in Bikita, Gorimbo has frequently spoken about growing up through major hardships, including losing his parents at a young age and working in gold mines during his teenage years.
After eventually building a fighting career through EFC Africa and the regional MMA scene, Gorimbo earned his UFC opportunity in 2023.
His story gained even more global attention after revealing he had only $7.49 in his bank account before one of his UFC victories.
That moment eventually caught the attention of Dwayne Johnson, who surprised Gorimbo by buying him a home in Miami after learning he had been sleeping inside his gym.
Gorimbo Leaves Door Open for Coaching Return
Although retiring as a fighter, Gorimbo suggested he may eventually return to MMA in another role.
“Maybe I will make a comeback as a coach or manager someday,” he wrote.
For now, however, Gorimbo says his focus shifts toward family and life outside active competition.

Beyond the UFC, Gorimbo also earned praise for charity efforts connected to Zimbabwe, including helping fund water well projects in his hometown.
Throughout his career, many fans viewed him as one of MMA’s most genuine and motivational personalities because of his openness about struggle, faith, family, and perseverance.
Even without reaching UFC championship status, Gorimbo’s journey resonated with many across the combat sports world.
