O.N.A.K.A.I., Ireland’s National Governing Body for karate, has confirmed the 2026 National Kumite Championships for Under-14 athletes, marking an important early highlight of the domestic competition calendar.
The championships will take place on Sunday, 22 February 2026, at Tallaght Leisure Centre. Competition begins at 10:00 AM, while athlete registration closes on Sunday, 15 February. All entries must be completed through the official Sportdata platform.
A Key Event for Youth Development
Importantly, the Under-14 National Kumite Championships provide young karateka with a structured pathway into national-level competition. As a result, athletes gain valuable experience in a regulated, high-standard environment.
Moreover, events at this level help prepare competitors for future selection opportunities and international competition. For many athletes, this championship represents their first step onto the national stage.
O.N.A.K.A.I.’s Role in Irish Karate
Founded in 1978, O.N.A.K.A.I. remains the largest and longest-established all-style karate organisation in Ireland. The association formed through the unification of Shotokan, Wado, and Kenpo, with the aim of strengthening karate nationwide.
Since then, O.N.A.K.A.I. has maintained exclusive recognition in Ireland from both the European Karate Federation (EKF) and the World Karate Federation (WKF). Notably, the WKF operates under the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
In addition, Sport Ireland formally recognised O.N.A.K.A.I. as the National Governing Body for karate in 2002. In 2018, the organisation also joined the Olympic Federation of Ireland, further reinforcing its national status.
Building the Future of Irish Karate
Today, O.N.A.K.A.I.’s membership includes clubs practising Kenpo, Shotokan, Wado, Kyokushinkai, Itosu Ryu, and Shito Ryu. Together, these clubs support athletes from recreational participation to elite competition.
