Police have arrested a 20-year-old Bronx man in connection with the shooting of New York Jets cornerback Kris Boyd, bringing an end to a weeks-long manhunt that stretched from Manhattan to upstate New York.
What happened?
Authorities say Frederick Green, 20, was taken into custody Monday morning near the University at Buffalo’s North Campus following a coordinated operation involving the U.S. Marshals Service and the New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force.
Green has been charged with attempted murder, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon, according to the New York City Police Department. He was transported to a Midtown Manhattan precinct, where he was formally charged on Tuesday.
The arrest follows the Nov. 16 shooting of Boyd, who was wounded around 2 a.m. during a dispute outside a popular Midtown Manhattan restaurant.
Inside the shooting
Police previously said a verbal dispute inside the restaurant escalated into a large brawl involving dozens of people, spilling onto the street near Seventh Avenue and West 38th Street.
During the chaos, Boyd was shot in the abdomen, with the bullet lodging in his lung. He was initially listed in critical but stable condition before being released from the hospital days later.
Boyd, 29, was with teammates Jamien Sherwood and Irvin Charles at the time of the shooting, authorities said.
Suspect tracked over 370 miles
Investigators believe Green fled New York City immediately after the shooting to avoid capture. He was eventually tracked to an apartment complex in Amherst, New York, more than 370 miles from the crime scene.
According to the U.S. Marshals, Green was seen peering out a second-floor window before retreating inside after spotting law enforcement and a canine unit. After nearby tenants were evacuated for safety, Green exited the apartment with his hands raised and surrendered without incident.
Officials said the firearm used in the shooting has not been recovered, and noted that Green had significantly altered his appearance, allegedly to evade detection.
Boyd’s road to recovery
Boyd later surprised teammates with an emotional visit to the Jets’ training facility in Florham Park, New Jersey, arriving with assistance from a walker. Known for his impact on special teams, Boyd reportedly addressed teammates at a meeting, drawing praise from players and coaches.
He confirmed on social media that he briefly returned to the hospital due to lingering health issues but said he was continuing to recover.
Boyd signed a one-year, $1.6 million contract with the Jets in March after stints with the Minnesota Vikings, Houston Texans, and Arizona Cardinals. A shoulder injury suffered during training camp had already sidelined him for the season before the shooting.
What’s next
Green remains in custody as the case proceeds through the court system. Authorities have not released additional details about a potential motive.
The Jets organization has not issued further comment on the arrest.
