The global Taekwondo community is mourning the loss of Dai Won Moon, a legendary martial arts pioneer widely recognized as the father of Taekwondo in Mexico.
World Taekwondo confirmed the passing of Grand Master Moon this week, describing him as one of the most important figures in the worldwide growth of Taekwondo.
According to World Taekwondo, Grand Master Moon played a major role in introducing and building the sport in Mexico during the late 1960s when Taekwondo was still relatively unknown in many parts of the world.
He later founded the Mexican Taekwondo Federation and served as its president, helping develop Mexico into one of the strongest Taekwondo nations internationally. Mexico earned its first medals at the 1975 World Taekwondo Championships before growing into a consistent force in the sport for decades afterward.

Beyond Mexico, Grand Master Moon also held major leadership roles within World Taekwondo itself, serving as a council member and chair of the Technical Committee.

One tribute recalled how Moon strongly supported and developed the Team World Cup format during its success in Mexico before it later gained international recognition through World Taekwondo events and Olympic presentations.
